This book was inspired by the international GLAM Labs Community was born in September 2018 at an event on building global 'Library Labs' held by the British Library. The diverse programme brought together over 70 people from 53 institutions, 23 countries and 4 continents to discuss relevant topics and understand the landscape of GLAM Labs around the world. It was followed up by a second global Labs meetup at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen in March 2019 where similar topics where discussed in the programme.
Based on the huge interest and need for sharing knowledge about growing Labs at GLAM institutions, a Book Sprint was planned. 16 members of the GLAM Labs community came together in Doha in September 2019, for a specific five-day book sprint to write and share their experiences of establishing and operating GLAM Labs, offering guidance, examples and inspiration to others who want to Open a GLAM Lab.

GLAM Labs have been the catalyst for significant structural change in the last decade and their ability to scale up or down as buffeted by winds of financial uncertainty has been an unlikely source of their resilience. This book is an essential read for cultural institution leaders looking to understand why their organisation might need a GLAM Lab, and also for those workers who are making the case for one. Each chapter clearly lays out the reasoning, benefits, challenges, and ways forward and the case studies are clear and compelling. I look forward to a further blossoming of Labs in our sector.
